Frequently Asked Questions
WHAT IS THE CLAIM ABOUT?
The Morrisons Equal Pay Claim is about the difference in pay between in-store workers and distribution staff.
We believe the roles are comparable and of equal value, so should be paid the same wage. However, store workers are currently paid up to as much as £3 per hour LESS than their distribution centre colleagues, which we think is unfair. We're here to change this!
We want to achieve equal pay for in-store workers compared with distribution roles, as well as helping those who are registered for the claim receive back-pay.
AM I ELIGIBLE?
Even if you no longer work at Morrisons, you could still be eligible to join the claim to potentially receive back-pay.
To be eligible to join the claim, you just need to:
Have worked at Morrisons within the LAST 6 YEARS,
In-store or as a delivery driver, and paid on an hourly rate.
COULD I LOSE MY JOB?
All claims are dealt with in Human Resources and are confidential, so no one in your store will find out that you have made a claim unless you choose to tell them.
You are also protected by the Equality Act, which prohibits employers from discriminating against employees. By law, you cannot be forced to leave your job for bringing a claim against your employer.
You will also not be alone in the Claim, as you will be joining thousands of other Morrisons staff.
HOW CAN DIFFERENT JOBS BE COMPARED?
Equal pay is not just about your wage compared with others doing the same job as you. It can also be about the wage difference between your role and a colleague who works in a similar role. This is known as like-for-like work, or comparable work of equal value.
Although the roles are different, we believe that store work and distribution work should be paid equally because they are of EQUAL VALUE to Morrisons.
According to the Equality Act, work that is comparable and of equal value should be paid the same wage.
WILL IT COST ME?
The claim is run entirely on a no-win, no-fee basis. This means if the case is unsuccessful, then you will not have to pay a penny.
If the claim is successful, then a small percentage of the winnings is deducted to cover the costs of running the claim.
Because the fee is just a percentage of your back-pay, it means that it will never be more than you are owed and so you won't be out of pocket.
WHY DO I NEED TO CLAIM FOR BACKPAY? SURELY EVERYONE IS ENTITLED TO IT?
If the claim is successful, then everyone who is eligible will receive equal pay moving forwards, regardless of whether they have registered for the claim or not.
However, if you have not registered for the claim then you will not be entitled to receive back-pay, as you would not have made a claim for it.
If you do not make a claim for back-pay then by law, Morrisons will not be obliged to backdate your pay; so you could be missing out.
Please be assured that strong victimisation laws are in place to protect you from any negative action being taken against you for bringing an equal pay claim. If you have any concerns about this or any other questions about the claim, you can call us and speak to our legal team in confidence.
